The wide flange beam is a type of steel beam used in the construction industry and in structural applications. Nucor Skyline supplies wide flange shapes produced from recycled steel using clean electric arc furnace technology. We supply various steel grades, including—among others—A913 quenched and tempered steel. This grade enables us to achieve high yield strengths—up to 70 ksi—while maintaining excellent field weldability.

Applications of Nucor Skyline Wide Flange Beams

Falsework and temporary structures

Falsework is a system used in bridges and other structures. It consists of wide flange beams, H-beams, and other steel components. Falsework serves as a temporary support structure during the construction of a permanent structure.

Structural foundation

Beams are used as part of the final structure in construction to support and stabilize structures. These structures can be buildings, bridges, and foundational walls.

Retaining walls

Wide flange beams serve as stabilizing elements in earth-retaining walls, highway noise barriers, and walls within basements or underground structures.

Wide flange beams are useful in cofferdam applications as part of bracing and waler systems. They enable the transfer of anchor loads to the wall's supporting piles or facilitate uniform load distribution along a sheet pile wall. The piles bear against the wall and are secured to its main steel components by welding or anchoring.

In applications such as secant and tangent pile walls, wide flange beams are used to allow for the free flow of concrete and reduce the formation of voids. Secant and tangent pile walls are formed by constructing reinforced concrete piles, using either a wide flange steel beam or steel reinforcing bars. Secant walls feature an overlap between piles, typically in the range of three inches. Tangent pile walls do not overlap and are constructed so that the piles are contiguous. Both secant and tangent pile walls are used as retaining walls, foundation walls, or diaphragm walls.

To achieve more robust or rigid walls, contractors use wide flange beams as king piles, combining them with sheet piles. The Z-beam wall application employs connectors welded to the ends of the beam flanges to create a connecting element between the sheet piles and the king piles.

In soldier pile wall applications (or soldier pile and lagging walls), wide flange steel piles are placed at regular intervals during the construction process. These wide flange piles can be installed by drilling or by being pressed into the ground. Sound and visual barriers are non-load-bearing structures designed to create a buffer against noise and visual pollution between a roadway and a residential or commercial area.

 

Standard Specifications for Wide Flange Beams

ASTM International is a global organization that provides standardized guidelines to product manufacturers and users of steel and its variants. The organization makes available the latest editions of essential publications for the classification, evaluation, and specification of steel types. Manufacturers use information specifying material, mechanical attributes, chemical composition, and metallurgical properties to produce mechanical components, construction elements, and related accessories.

ASTM A36

ASTM A36 is a standard specification covering structural-quality shapes intended for use in the construction of bridges, buildings, and other applications involving bolted, welded, or riveted connections. It applies primarily to structural carbon steel.

ASTM A572

ASTM A572 Grade 50 is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel containing columbium and vanadium. The specification covers Grade 50 steel for construction structures subject to welding, bolting, and riveting.

ASTM A588

The ASTM A588 standard is a specification for high-strength, low-alloy structural steel. Advantages of this specification include atmospheric corrosion resistance and weight savings.

ASTM A690

ASTM A690 specifies material and testing standards for high-strength, low-alloy, phosphorus-bearing structural-quality steel H-piles and sheet piles. This specification is commonly useful in the construction of retaining walls, excavations, and block walls.

ASTM A709

The ASTM A709 specification covers bars and shapes intended for bridge projects. It applies to carbon steel and high-strength, low-alloy steel shapes.

ASTM A913 Grade 50

ASTM A913 Grade 50 is the standard specification for high-strength, low-alloy structural steel shapes. This specification covers Grade 50 structural steel shapes produced using the QSI process. These shapes are intended for use in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures utilizing bolted, riveted, or welded connections.

ASTM A913 Grade 65

ASTM A913 Grade 65 is the same standard specification as ASTM A913 Grade 50, but differs in grade; the structural steel is Grade 65.

ASTM A992

The ASTM A992 specification applies to structural steel shapes intended for building frameworks. It covers rolled shapes for building structures, bridges, and general structural projects.

ASTM is the applicable standard in the United States. Steel grades for wide flange beams are defined in U.S., Canadian, and European standard specifications. ASTM specifies the grade based on yield strength. For example, ASTM A36 grade has a yield strength of 36 ksi, while ASTM A992 has 50 ksi. There are eight steel grades in the United States.
