The addition of new environmental controls at IP&L's Petersburg Generation Station will enable the coal fired power plant to reduce its mercury emissions by approximately 80 percent. The pollution control elements will enable the plant to comply with the new Utility Mercury and Air Toxic standards set by the EPA.
Problem
Limited access. The construction of the new environmental controls requires the addition of new foundations in and amongst the existing structures at the operating facility. With limited space availability for the addition of new foundations and the large loading demands for the foundations, a foundation system that could provide high capacities in locations with restricted access was required.
Solution
Micropiles. High capacity micropiles with design loads of 200 tons in compression and 150 tons in tension were installed in the areas of the power plant with limited access.
